Negative thoughts are one of the benchmarks of anxiety.
It’s natural to want to know how to get rid of them because negative thoughts interfere in our ability to live the life we want.
Anxiety and thoughts work together and strengthen each other in order to make us miserable. They may strengthen each other, but we are stronger. When we learn how to deal with them, we can get rid of them.
Negative thinking can be a habit of mind. Thoughts sink in and linger there until you take action to get rid of them.
When you first start thinking negatively, most of the time we try to just push those thoughts out of our heads. We try as hard as possible to stop thinking about them and push them out.
Most of the time this backfires. Resisting those negative thoughts can actually reinforce that thinking pattern and just make things worse. The more you try not to think about something, the more you actually end up thinking about it. True Story.
To get rid of negative thinking, you need to try a different approach – something that will clear your mind of those negative thoughts once and for all.
You have to decide that you don’t want to feel this way, then you will be able to work through the negativity to find your happy place.
So what do you do to work through the emotions?
Recognize that you need to do something NOW to manage your emotions so that you can let them go and get on with your day.
Invest time in yourself that you know will be worth it in the long run. Put away all distractions so you will be able to tune into YOU and take care of yourself.
Take stock in your emotions. What are the cues that are going on? Where did the negativity start? You have to decide that you don’t want to feel shitty, then you will be able to work through the negativity to find your happy place. Click To Tweet
Journal it out. Write down what happened, the context (i.e. my week has been very hectic at work and I haven’t felt like I had much mental space, which is draining for me). You will then able to understand the underlying emotions that you are feeling (mentioned above) and the reasons WHY you feel this way.
You will begin to see meaning. Instead of looking at everything that you are feeling and why and trying to find a solution to those issues. Start asking yourself empowering and inspiring questions: How do I want to feel today? What’s my vision for my day?
This will help you uncover what you need to do to help you get out of your mood. What does that look like to you? Is is reading a great book? Maybe going for walk? Playing with the kids or pet?
Taking the time to listen to your emotions means that you will know what you needed today. Even if it to just sit by yourself and relax in front of the tv. Sometimes life just gets carried away.
Take some time for yourself. It may be just what you needed.
Good. So how do you feel now?
I bet you feel GREAT. Why?
Because you took the time to listen to your emotions, to acknowledge them so that you could move on. Your emotions are there to send you a message and as long as you listen, that’s half the battle.
The rest is a choice – You get to choose how you want to feel about the whole situation. Related It is all about your choices.
So when you have moments where your emotions become too overwhelming and you don’t know what to do? Take a moment to listen to yourself. Listen to your heart. What is it that is REALLY bothering you?
I hope this little exercise helps the next time you are in a tough spot.
Let me know what your experiences are with YOUR emotions and how you manage them.
Have an awesome day!!!
Loving life one day at a time!
