The Comfort Zone….Good, Bad or Ugly?

What is a comfort zone?  I know you’ve seen inspirational quotes that encourage you to get out and do something new—something you wouldn’t normally do—because you know it!! Getting out of your routine just takes so much work. So why is it so hard to break out of your comfort zone, and why it’s good for you when you do it. Once you figure it out and with just a few minor adjustments, you can break away from your routine and do some pretty great things.

I  think it is always important to push the boundaries of my comfort zone, and when I do, it feels fricken amazing. It is so damn easy to get stuck in a rut. doing the same things all the time because it is easy.

But what is the “comfort zone” exactly?

Simply, your comfort zone is your space where all your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes your stress and reduces risk.  You benefit be having regular happiness, low anxiety, and hopefully reduced stress.

So when  we tend to get comfortable with the familiar and our routines, as soon as  we’re introduced to new and interesting things, sometimes the anxiety gets up, and we fade father back into our respective corners.

I want you to do start thinking about what’s holding you back from doing amazing things – what fears and anxieties are stopping you from experiencing new things, putting yourself in new situations or pushing yourself to do something that makes you uncomfortable?

Here is a list of five things you can do to start getting unstuck.

Keep a list of  goals.

I always seem to be harping on the importance of setting goals. This is no exception. I keep a list of growth goals. I keep the list close by, and I always try to read it daily. Have I managed to accomplish anything on my list that gets me out of my comfort zone? Because I read the list daily, I know I’ll be accountable to it. It keeps these things in the forefront of my mind. If an opportunity comes up that is on my list. I try to take it..

Switch up your routine.

Routines are as much about comfort as they are about efficiency. Small changes in your routine might lead to meeting new people and seeing different sights. Take a different route to work. Have your lunch some place new. Change is good for the soul. Read My Little Changes Can Lead To Big Results

Try it a different way.

Anything that I struggle with, sometimes just trying different approaches is all it takes to overcome it. Just a change in tactics. This makes me look at it a little differently and can make it easier to accomplish.

Agree to something you wouldn’t normally consider.

Sometimes when someone offers me something that I would normally refuse, I start saying yes. Since I have gotten older there seem to be more of them. Like last week I was asked to sub for a floor hockey team. I knew my knees would hate me later, but I did it anyway. It was a blast and I made a few new and interesting friends.  Yes, my knees paid for it, and I can’t say I will be joining again in the future but it was fun to do something different rather than spending the evening on my blog or in front of the tv.

Hang out with someone different.

Do you have a group of friends you always hang out with? Try switching it up and go for lunch or coffee with someone you wouldn’t normally hang with. Maybe a coworker? Or the mother of one of your kids friends. The point here is to spend some time with someone different than you.

Think answering these questions:

  1. What makes you feel uncomfortable? And why?
  2. What’s a situation/opportunity that you avoid because of that discomfort?
  3. What’s a small step you can take towards overcoming it?
